February 02, 2007 09:31am
OIL giant Exxon Mobil has posted the largest annual profit by a US company – $US39.5 billion ($51.0 billion). Rival Shell has done likewise in the UK. The 2006 profit topped the previous record, also by Exxon Mobil. The record earnings amounted to roughly $US4.5 million ($5.8 billion) an hour for the world's largest publicly traded oil company, which produces about 3 percent of the world's oil.It also equals the approximate gross domestic product - a measure of all goods and services produced within a country in a given year - of countries like Ecuador, Luxembourg and Croatia.
Also eye-popping was Exxon Mobil's revenue, which rose to $US377.64 billion - nearly half a trillion Australian dollars - surpassing the record $US370.68 billion it posted in 2005.
"Exxon Mobil continued to leverage its globally diverse resource base to bring additional crude oil and natural gas to market," said Rex W. Tillerson, chairman of the Texas-based company.
Exxon Mobil's record annual earnings followed a year of extraordinarily high energy prices as crude oil topped $US78 a barrel in the summer – driving up average gasoline prices in the United States to more than $US3 a gallon - and beyond $1.40 a litre here in Australia.
Exxon shares rose US47c to $US74.57 in afternoon trading on the New York Stock Exchange.
Meanwhile in Europe, competitor Royal Dutch Shell reported net income was $US25.4 billion ($32.8 billion), a record for a UK-listed company.

Yes, oil companies are making unprecedented amounts of money. ExxonMobil (NYSE: XOM) made more than $40 billion in 2007, up from $11.7 billion in 1997. The main driver behind the surge was an increase in the price of crude, now topping $130 a barrel. But the increase was not due to some sort of newfound profit wizardry, despite the complaint du jour.
How do we know? Look at Exxon's profit margins over the past five years:
|
Metric | 2007 | 2006 | 2005 | 2004 | 2003 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue | $390.3 billion | $365.4 billion | $358.9 billion | $291.2 billion | $237.0 billion |
| Net income | $40.6 billion | $39.5 billion | $36.1 billion | $25.3 billion | $21.5 billion |
| Profit margin | 10.4% | 10.8% | 10% | 8.6% | 9% |
Profit margins hovering around 9% to 10% are hardly anything to be giddy over. To put it in perspective, Google's (Nasdaq: GOOG) profit margin was more than 25% in 2007, while Microsoft's (Nasdaq: MSFT) exceeded 27%. Big Oil's net income is such an eye-catching dollar amount because -- not to be master of the obvious -- oil is really expensive, and we use a lot of it.
Ah-ha!
That leads us to a new road: Big Oil must be behind crude oil's ghastly price. Those thieves!
Easy there, Sherlock. Consider:
- The U.S imports nearly 60% of oil from foreign countries, the biggest of which include Canada, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Nigeria, Venezuela, and Iraq.
- The largest U.S oil company, ExxonMobil, produces just 3% of world oil supply.
The argument that the run-up in price owes to Big Oil manipulating supply ignores an important fact: An overwhelming amount of oil production is controlled by nationalized companies you've probably never heard of. Most of them could give a hoot what you think, for that matter. One of them -- Saudi Aramco -- claims almost a quarter of the world's conventional oil reserves, and boasts on a company-affiliate website that a single day's oil production could make enough gasoline to drive roundtrip to Mars 48 times.
Have you ever heard of Sonatrach? OAO Rosneft? Qatar General Petroleum? They're all oil companies, and they're all much, much bigger than anything based in America. Despite their intimidating size, Big Oil companies such as Exxon, Chevron (NYSE: CVX), ConocoPhillips (NYSE: COP), and Marathon Oil (NYSE: MRO) are small fish in a very large pond. Their ability to control price is about as strong as my ability to manhandle Shaq.
True, much of its huge profits are currently driven by skyrocketing crude oil prices. But even if oil prices moderate, Exxon Mobil's awesome earnings aren't likely to crash, Helm argues
The common narrative is that oil companies are making record profits, and the numbers don't lie. ExxonMobil made US$40.6 billion in profits in 2007 -- about US$1,300 of profit every second of the year. Royal Dutch Shell made a mere US$31 billion in net income in 2007.
The cost of oil production
A Bank of Kuwait report released in mid-2006 said that the break-even point for a Canadian oilsands producer on a barrel of crude oil is US$33. In Saudi Arabia, the number was US$30. In Kuwait, it was only US$17.
With crude oil passing $133 a barrel on Thursday, nearing three times the price of a barrel in January 2007, the sheer profit is staggering.
John Hofmeister -- president of Shell Oil, the U.S. branch of Royal Dutch Shell -- told the Senate committee this week that his company could be successful with prices at $35 to $65 a barrel.
The other oil executives sitting with him weren't impressed with that statement.

March 12 2008 (Bloomberg) -- Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke's latest attempt to alleviate seized-up credit markets marks his most direct effort yet to repair the mortgage meltdown that poses the biggest threat to the economy
The Fed pledged yesterday to lend, in return for mortgage debt, $200 billion of Treasuries to the securities firms that trade directly with the central bank. Officials told reporters later that the program may escalate from there as the central bank seeks to break the logjam in the home-loan market.

The Fed said it would lend up to 200 bln usd in Treasuries for up to 28 days against a wide range of collateral, including asset-backed securities that private lenders have been shunning recently.

The KL Composite Index (KLCI) tumbled 123 points, or 9.5%, to a 14-month low of 1,173.2 points in its biggest single-day loss so far.
The intensive selling activated the circuit breaker at around 3pm. Trading was halted for an hour when the benchmark index plunged 130 points, or 10%, to 1,166. This was the first time the market-wide circuit breaker was activated on Bursa Malaysia.
The KLCI is down nearly 343 points, or 22.6%, from its record high of 1,516 on Jan 11. Such a drastic fall is a sure sign that the local bourse has turned bearish.
The ringgit also fell 1.3% to 3.2074 versus the dollar. The drop was seen as evidence of the outflow of foreign investment.

The Kuala Lumpur Composite Index (KLCI) suffered its biggest loss in a decade yesterday on panic selling after the long-ruling Barisan Nasional coalition lost control of four of the country's 13 states as well as its critical two-thirds majority in parliament in weekend elections.
The KLCI dropped more than 10 percent at one point in Monday's trading. The sharp decline triggered the stock exchange's circuit breaker in the afternoon session and caused trading to be suspended for one hour. The KLCI closed at 1,173.22 points, down 123.11 points or 9.5 percent.
